Time Traveler Caught On Film? Charlie Chaplin Video Explained

Time Traveler Caught On Film: Charlie Chaplin Time Travel Cell Phone Explained – A Belfast movie-lover is convinced he has discovered a cellphone in one of Charlie Chaplin’s movies that was filmed in 1928.

After a year of analysis, research and digging George Clarke posted a video on Youtube where he goes out of his way to show that there is a mobile phone in Charlie Chaplin’s The Circus movie, in the DVD extras menu in Documents/The Hollywood Premiere that was shot in 1928.

In the clip we we can see a woman putting her hand near her ear talking as she walks in the street all alone. Clarke may believes that he saw a cell phone and may have created an internet sensation with his clip but experts and non believers in time traveling are singing another tune.

Some find the information that he shares in his clip is very confusing so they dismiss his various hypotheses and say that he simply manipulated the film.

Others believe that the woman was simply scratching her ear, or was trying to hide from the camera or the hot sun.

Another theory is that the supposed “time traveler” could have been hard of hearing and was wearing a Western Electric Model 34A Audiphone Carbon Hearing Aid.

It is certain that time traveling theory is much more exciting, but even if space and time travel were possible, what is “very unlikely”, says an astrophysicist, is that there is no way she would have been able to carry anything larger than a subatomic particle.

There were no towers back then, were there?

    3. onimoni says:

Well, my time machine is still on development, after seeing this. Im confident that my time machine will be a success.

    4. TROTU says:

Do you honestly have to ask if there were cell towers in the 1920′s? REALLY?!

    5. Moc says:

What an idiot discovery! There were no any cellphone signals in that such time. . How come that the lady is talking to someone where any signals are not present? O come one! Albert Einstein is already dead so, time traveling is no longer experimental.

    6. ggb says:

      Thats Doc Brown, duh!!!

    7. drc says:

If time travel had been achieved (as evidenced by the photo), why is a multi-dimensional communication device (outwardly resembling a “cell phone”) out of the question?

      • charlesincharge says:

Agreed drc! Nice to see someone else outside of the white box, it’s nice out here.

        • inc0gneato says:

I also agree, of course it couldn’t be a cell phone, cause no towers. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be something else that maybe functions the same way. The woman certainly seems to be carrying on a conversation. The only other thing, and probably the most likely is a lady with schizophrenia or something talking into a cigarette case or something… LOL

          • LeeThompson says:

I have two thoughts about the no tower bit. First its believed that sound waves continue and dont stop. That is why we receive a few false transmissions at the satilite far far away…the waves are just reaching them. The person could be sending himself a message in the future.

Then there is the thought that timetravel is done by riping a hole in the universe. If the hole is still open then waves would still be able to reach.

Then also as someone said before it could be a device like a walky talky.

            • Daimoth says:

Ripping holes in reality likely can’t work because of feedback. Just like sound feeding back into a microphone from the same speaker, dimensional feedback exists in the form of the natural radiation that exists all around us.

Normally, these levels are quite small.

However, if the same natural radiation fed back into the theoretical “hole”, it would increase referred-to radiation level in that area a small amount. However, this feedback would be a constant loop. Radiation would build up uncontrollably and any sort of portal stable enough for a living organism to pass through would be unimaginably dangerous, and whatever means opened it would likely also cause it to collapse on itself for this same reason.

Learned that from Steven Hawking, I did. :D

    8. MIKE HAUCK says:

No way Jose! No cell phone. Its a crazy old lady talking into a shoe!!! I guarantee it!!! Cuz my great great great grandfather was the director.

    9. TravelerKCAB says:

Who is she calling?? No one else has a cell phone?? And hard lines won’t catch a signal.

    10. texas [born&raised] says:

Is it so hard to believe that there could be a cell phone back then. Dont label me as a crazy person because i believe that there could be things out of our hands but maybe she was an inventor or her husband was an inventor. MAYBE it was a crazy old lady talking into a shoe!!

    11. Maeve McAuley says:

I think some of you are being a little narrow minded. If this woman did, in fact, come from an era in time where they have time machines, then they could have very well invented a form of cell phone that does not require a tower’s signal. Now, I don’t claim to know how this technology would work but, hell, it’s the future! Anything’s possible. Think about just the simple technologies we have today that we take for granted. Now think about only 50 years ago. Do you realize how many of the things we have now would have seemed like the stuff of fairytales?

    12. BadWolf says:

The Doctor fixed up my phone to receive a signal from any part of the the universe in any time. I remember that I was talking to my Mum at the Hollywood premier of Mr. Chaplin’s “The Circus”. It was an ace film.

    13. Carl M says:

I find it difficult to accept this was the Western Electric Model 34A Audiphone Carbon Hearing Aid, as looking at it, the ear piece is small whilst the microphone part is quite large and you would not hold that part to the ear, you would want that microphone out in the open in front of you to pick up sound. As for hiding from the sun, when I shield my face from the sun or do not want to be seen on camera, I would have my hand flat out to cover up most of my face.
This persons fingers are in a gripping position, they are holding something and walking in a manner in which people today walk with a cell phone.

However, if they were from the future, do you think another form of communication much less subtle would be available?, perhaps they are a time traveler but not in the too distant future. If we went back 15 years with today’s cell phone, today’s PC’s and talked about the Internet, we would be locked up for being a lunatic.

Why do we find it so difficult to comprehend that which we do not understand?

      • Damn Dirty Ape says:

Maybe she just had the mic in her hand and was adjusting the ear piece as she walked. I am sure we have all had something in our hand and done something else with the same hand at the same time.

Either that, or she was asking Scotty to beam her up.

    14. nickk says:

Hey guess what?? The back to the future movie boxset just so happens to be coming out around the same time these “discoveries” are turning up, hmmmmm. Yeah think about that lol.

    15. who says:

It’s clearly a classic case of using time and relative distance in space and she is obviously holding a sonic screwdiver to home in on Davros.

    16. Ashley says:

Wow ummm if theres technology for someone to be able to time travel im sure that this “time traveler” has the technology for a cell phone to work w/ out a tower. DUMB A**ES!

    17. Ashley says:

Wow ummm if theres technology for someone to be able to time travel im sure that this “time traveler” has the technology for a cell phone to work w/ out a tower. STUPID PPL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    18. Midlandbjj says:

Has anyone had the CD analyzed to see if it was photo-shopped? Has the original footage been compared to see if the woman appears in it. Is it not logical to first eliminate the possibility of fraud before speculating on whether the “woman” has anything in her hand, is using a device of the era or is a “time traveler”?

    19. Lupe says:

If it was a time traveler then the right explanation is a window of time open for a couple seconds where she enter and exist. BC if it was wondering around ill be freaking out. Conclusion is it just a crazy lady avoiding the film.

    24. Bill Gatess says:

What if all the people on the side of the road that talk to themselves and ask for money are TIME TRAVELERS TODAY !!! Watch out !

    25. drkassassin067 on xbox live hit me up says:

if any one does end up makeing a time machine go back in time and dance on this video.kk

    26. SKEPTIC says:

My guess is it was shot and added to the movie recently before being released again.

    27. Phil_W says:

OK, I have just had a real close look at this and also clicked (with no-doubt many others, the hearing aid museum link.

The problem I see is when you look at the dimensions of the Western Electric Model 34A Audiphone Carbon Hearing Aid. The battery unit measures 7 3/4 inches by 4 inches by 1 1/2 inches.

On the close up images of the ‘communications unit’ (whatever that may be) is no more than a finger thickness which excludes it being 1 1/2 inches thick! That would be 38mm thick!

I think the idea of it being a audiophone is a good one, but the physical sizes do not stack up…. These things used 3 D cells…… the thing in the video is not big enough!

Let me know what you all think

Quote from Hearing Aid Museum website

“It was one of the few 1-piece carbon hearing aids of the time. The unit measured 7¾” by 4″ by 1½” and weighed just under 2 lbs. when fitted with batteries.

Audiphone consists of a carbon microphone (top left) inside a metal case also holding three “D” size 1½ volt batteries (bottom half of case).”

    28. SKEPTIC says:

We are applying our concepts of modern technology from 2010 and using it to explain something from the 1920′s. There could be a variety of circumstances that caused that man playing a women to have looked as if he had a cell phone.

    29. betsy rudolf says:

this photo is of me. I was calling my broker when the photo was taken. I didnt think I would have to come back just to explain, but good thing i did or alot of idiots would make up stuff. I just happen to be walking by while the movie was being shot, those were the days. I see there has been an African American president elected, just had to see for myself when I heard, again.

    30. DanBrooks says:

Strange. I’ve seen other stuff like this. One with a man in the 40′s standing in a crowd, but looked ‘shopped. But this is weird, seriously, when the film was shot and put this bit on extras, why didn’t they examine her? surley she stood out like a sore thumb. Plus she is talking to someone on that device, and NO such communications devices were developed in them days… so yeah, Strange.

    31. Sue says:

The cell was probably sent back in time to a scientist who believes in time travel and was asked to walk in front of the camera while communicating with people in the future, I think it is a man in disguise who did not want to draw attention to himself, as far as cell towers go nikola tesla was a great inventor of wireless electricity, maybe the face of this man with the cell can be matched to a scientist of that time.

    32. Block says:

If I remember correct, wasn’t there an episode of the original Star Trek, when they visited a planet that was in it’s 1940′s time line compared to our own Earth. So wouldn’t the natives also have thought how strange someone talking into a small rectangular object (communicator) if observed. Unlikely yes, but anything is possible. I am not really a treckie, but just wanted to bring up the point that it doesn’t have to be time travel

    33. Jules says:

The following link shows a very similar device being held by a man in a very similar way.
      http://hearing.siemens.com/sg/10-about-us/01-our-history/milestones.jsp?year=1924

Also dictaphone technology was just about at the portable stage, lots of audio recording innovation taking place at that time. First ‘talkie’ movie ‘The Jazz Singer’ 1927. Coule have been a recording for a radio show.

Quote about dictaphone developer (note hollywood ref)
‘Kelly Monroe Turner became “quite wealthy” from the sale of rights to his dictophone and undisclosed “inventions which proved to be of great value to the U.S. and its allies during World War I.” Reportedly a good friend of Thomas Edison, Monroe married late in life and resided in Hollywood, where his services were utilized by the motion picture industry. Turner died in Hollywood on Nov. 7, 1927, at age 68′

    34. Daimoth says:

Seems to me like somebody was talking to her from just off camera. Considering the fact that she turns and speaks during a scene fade, I’d say that at the time of filming, the scene was probably set to stop before it did in the final product.

When you edit a movie, there’s all sorts of extra footage of the director or somebody else talking to the people who are on camera. When the director yells “cut”, the camera does not magically stop filming, the cinematographer or camera person has to turn it off.

The baffling question is why she’s holding the side of her head or ear while being an extra in this film, which, considering the star, was probably a big deal at the time. That’s like an extra in a modern film doing a goddamn backflip before exiting the scene.

Hell, she could have been talking to the somebody off-camera who was asking her “Why the fuck are you holding the side of your head, extra?”

    35. zach says:

if she is really a time traveler then she is probly from the future and maybe in the future we wont need cell phone towers
